Patrick Kane struck twice to help the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-3 win over Western Conference rivals San Jose at the HP Pavilion.

A frantic first period ended with the scores tied at 3-3 but Kane put the Blackhawks ahead for the first time in the game at 11:52 of the second period then hit an empty-netter with 1:13 left to play in the third.

The win put Western Conference leaders Chicago three points clear of the Sharks, who were also beaten 2-1 at Anaheim on Monday night.

Joe Pavelski and Tommy Wingels struck early in the first period to give the Sharks the lead which prompted Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville to call a time-out for a frank exchange with his players.

It worked briefly as Brandon Saad bagged the first goal of his NHL career but Michal Handzus restored San Jose's two-goal cushion within 30 seconds.

The Blackhawks' response was immediate as Andrew Shaw scored from the slot just eight seconds later and they were level on 11:37 when Marcus Kruger bundled in.

That set the scene for Kane to beat Antti Niemi from the right circle and put Chicago ahead and as the game boiled over the Blackhawks held firm until Kane wrapped up the win late on.

The Blackhawks remain the only team in the NHL without a loss in regulation time.
