Andrei Markov: Fourth goal of the season
New Jersey suffered their first defeat of the season as Andrei Markov's strike in overtime earned Montreal a 4-3 victory on Sunday.
The Devils had hit back from 3-1 down in the third period to take the game into extra time, but Markov netted the winner with just 38 seconds remaining in the overtime period.
Ryan White and Brendan Gallagher got the Canadiens off to a flying start with a goal each in the first period, and Patrick Elias pulled one back in the second.
Brandon Prust restored Montreal's two-goal advantage, but New Jersey rallied with goals from David Clarkson and Dainius Zubrus.
But with a shootout looming, Rene Bourque mis-hit an attempted shot and the puck ran kindly for Markov to flick home the winner.
Elsewhere in the NHL, Evander Kane scored two minutes into overtime to give Winnipeg a 5-4 victory over the New York Islanders, who had led by two with just eight minutes left in the third period.
And Chicago made it six wins out of six as Nick Leddy scored in the third minute of overtime to snatch a 2-1 win over Detroit.
