Coventry Blaze slumped to their worst home defeat in Elite League history as they were thrashed 8-0 by Nottingham Panthers at the SkyDome Arena.

Panthers go into Christmas four points clear of Belfast at the top of the league standings after a dominating display against Coventry, who have only one win in their last five.

The visitors were 3-0 up inside seven minutes as David Ling, Robert Lachowicz and Eric Werner all netted before Mike Egener of the Blaze and Kelsey Wilson of the Panthers dropped the gloves in the 10th minute.

Nottingham grabbed a fourth through Ling at 12.48 before Bruce Graham and Wilson added two more to the tally in the second period, with another fight between Benn Olson of the Blaze and Guillaume Lepine of the Panthers occuring in the meantime.

Egener and Lepine finished the period with fight number three, while Matt Francis and Brandon Benedict were on target in the third period to complete the rout.

Elsewhere in the Elite League, Belfast Giants claimed a 2-1 away win against Sheffield Steelers to establish themselves as Nottingham's main challengers ahead of Christmas.

Darryl Lloyd, one of the league's top agitators, scored an unlikely double to sink the Steelers while GB goaltender Stephen Murphy made an impressive 33 saves. Simon Ferguson scored for Sheffield.

Both of the other matches on Sunday needed extra peiods, with Cardiff Devils defeating Hull Stingrays 2-1 after overtime and Fife Flyers seeing off Dundee Stars 4-3 after a penalty shootout.
