Doug Christiansen: Completed weekend double over Panthers
Leaders Belfast Giants extended their winning streak to six games following a 3-2 road success at title rivals Nottingham Panthers on Sunday night.
And that result allowed the Sheffield Steelers to move above Nottingham in second place with a 5-3 win over Coventry Blaze.
Sheffield are on 64 points, one more than Nottingham, and nine behind Belfast, although they have played six fewer games than the Giants.
The Cardiff Devils, fourth in the standings, enjoyed a 3-2 win over Edinburgh, while Hull beat struggling Dundee in a penalty shootout.
Giants completed a great weekend on Sunday, winning in Nottingham for the second straight night with three goals in the final seven minutes - the winner with eight seconds left from Nick Kuiper.
The Panthers made a storming start as Stephen Lee and Robert Lachowicz put them 2-0 ahead inside the first period.
The second session was a better one for Giants but they still could not find a way past Craig Kowalski in the home cage and there was no addition to the score from either side.
As the third period wore on it looked increasingly likely that Panthers would pick up a vital win but it all changed when Adam Keefe scrambled the puck home at 53.00 to change the momentum of the game.
Giants poured forward and levelled at 57.22 with a goal from Robert Dowd and then heartbreak for the home support as with only eight seconds remaining Kuiper fired the puck into the net to give Giants an unlikely but priceless two points.
