Hugo Palmer: Delighted with Audacia's victory
Audacia thrived in the rain-softened conditions to take the honours in the Listed Weatherbys VAT Services Pipalong Stakes at Pontefract.
Heavy and thundery showers that began just before racing soon turned the ground to soft from good, good to firm in places to help the cause of the Hugo Palmer-trained filly.
Amulet, Stellar Express and Masarah ensured a proper gallop in the atrocious conditions until giving way two furlongs out, at which Dutch Rose made an audacious bid for home.
She made a brave move to the front but had no answer to the late thrust of Audacia (12/1), who got on top inside the final furlong to win by a length, with Vanity Rules putting in solid late work to be just half a length away in third.
It was 11 lengths and beyond to the remainder.
"I'm delighted. I always believed from the moment she came into training that she was a stakes filly. She is, but only on this ground," Palmer told Racing UK.
"We put her in the Hoppings Stakes at Newcastle and they didn't get the rain so she didn't go. She had run very well at Epsom behind Thistle Bird in the Princess Elizabeth Stakes, coming from the widest draw as well.
"This morning I nearly didn't put her in the box when I saw the ground had gone to good to firm, but I spoke to the clerk of the course at five o'clock and he said rain was forecast, and they had watered, so there was every chance.
"I don't know what we'll do with her now. Obviously, she's going to need this ground. She's won a Listed race now so she's definitely worth her owners keeping to breed from."
