Roger Varian's Belardo made an impressive debut in the opener at Yarmouth this afternoon.

The Newmarket dogs had been barking his name before the race as the Lope De Vega colt was sent off the 8-13 favourite for the Haven Seashore At Great Yarmouth Maiden Stakes over six furlongs.

Ridden in midfield by Andrea Atzeni, he was nudged into the lead a furlong out and just had to be kept up to his work to beat Heartbreak Hero by a comfortable two and a quarter lengths without breaking sweat.

"He won quite nicely," said Varian.

"He'd shown plenty of ability at home and his work had been good.

"I was pleased with what I saw and he'll be entered in most of the good two-year-old races, but we'll have to see how he comes out of this before making any plans.

"You always hope they improve with racing, so it bodes well with the future in mind."
