Clever Cookie (left) dead-heated on his last visit to York
Clever Cookie is reported to be firmly on track for next month's 55th John Smith's Cup at York.
The six-year-old was a Grade Two hurdles winner at Kelso back in March and has made a seamless switch to the Flat, winning a Doncaster maiden before landing a competitive handicap on the Knavesmire in May.
Clever Cookie subsequently dead-heated with Ralston Road in a Listed event at the end of last month, although trainer Peter Niven expressed concerns about the one-mile-six-furlong trip after that shared success when talking in terms of the Ebor.
He said: "He's fine and on course for the John Smith's Cup next month, all being well.
"It's been quite hard mixing a winter campaign into a summer campaign and I don't know that it was the case that he didn't stay last time.
"You don't win a Listed race and not stay, but perhaps he just wasn't quite at his best.
"I gave him a couple of easy weeks and he's back on track now."
Clever Cookie features among the initial 37 entries for the Juddmonte International at York in August.
While a crack at the 10-furlong feature appears optimistic, connections believe it is worth giving themselves the option.
Niven added: "Unfortunately you have to enter very early for those kind of races and if you're not in it, you can't win it.
"If he was going to a black type horse I'd probably prefer to work our way up, but we will see what happens as it's a while away yet."
