Lucky Kristale (right): Crucial workout
Lucky Kristale faces a crucial workout on Saturday ahead of her possible attempt to redeem her reputation in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot on Friday week.
Last year's Duchess of Cambridge and Lowther Stakes winner cut no ice in the Qipco 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on her reappearance and has given mixed messages on the gallops since then.
Her trainer George Margarson admits he has been putting her to the sword at exercise and is looking to her passing her next test at the weekend.
However, the Newmarket handler will not risk her in the three-year-old fillies' championship over a mile if she does not sparkle to his satisfaction.
"She worked a week ago with Tom (Queally) on her. He was very pleased with her, but wasn't over the moon with the way she worked last Saturday. We did step her up big time and asked her to do a lot and she did work a bit better again today," Margarson told At The Races.
"She's working again on Saturday. We're working her over seven furlongs to make sure she gets the trip. If she works well on Saturday she'll go for the Coronation. If not, she won't run at all, we'll wait."
Harry Bentley is looking forward to continuing his association with Lighting Thunder after steered her into second place in both the English and Irish 1000 Guineas.
"She's run two absolute crackers in two Guineas, so you can't take anything away from her," said the jockey.
"It was unfortunate the rain came in Ireland, but she ran very well there on ground that didn't suit. At Ascot, hopefully, the ground will be ideal for her and she will run a massive race."
