A crack at the Investec Derby at Epsom has yet to be ruled out for French 2000 Guineas winner, Karakontie.

Winner of the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, also known as the French 2000 Guineas, the Jonathan Pease-trained colt is due to be stepped up in trip for his next start.

Whether that is for the 10-furlong Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly or for the premier Classic in England over 12 furlongs has yet to be decided but Alan Cooper, racing manager for the Niarchos Family, indicated Epsom is being given serious consideration.

"He's in good shape and we're just going to give it a few more days before we decide where to go with him," said Cooper.

"The options are the Prix du Jockey Club and he will be left in at Epsom at the latest forfeit stage. The most important thing is to do what is best for the horse.

"He will be stepping up in trip. I think the way he finished the Poulains suggests that is the best thing to do, but whether he runs over 10 furlongs or 12 is part of the decision process.

"We just need a few more days to think it all over.

"The impression he gave was that he would improve for a step up in trip now, but how far we step him up is another question."
