Ruby Walsh believes he will probably never partner a better staying hurdler than Big Buck's.

The 11-year-old won the Ladbrokes World Hurdle four times but could finish no better than fifth in Thursday's renewal, prompting connections to retire the gelding.

Big Buck's missed the majority of last season through injury and both trainer Paul Nicholls and owner Andy Stewart decided to draw stumps with the 10-times Grade One winner following his eclipse.

Walsh rode Big Buck's to each of his four World Hurdle titles when stable jockey to Nicholls and he hailed the veteran as a "brilliant" horse.

He told Racing UK: "I had great days with him here, at Aintree and at other places. He was a brilliant horse. It's just like everything, age catches up with everyone. I suppose having a year off at 10 years old makes it even more difficult.

"He pulled up 100 per cent, tried his best as he always does and he'll have a good retirement.

"I doubt (I will ride a better staying hurdler). He was a very good horse, he wasn't the greatest jumper in the world and that probably stopped him from being a Gold Cup horse but he was a brilliant staying hurdler."
