Cavalryman geared up for the defence of his Dubai Gold Cup crown with a comfortable victory in the Group Three Nad Al Sheba Trophy at Meydan.

Saeed bin Suroor's stable stalwart, now an eight-year-old, proved a cut above his rivals as he powered to a five-and-a-half-length victory over Star Empire in the hands of Silvestre de Sousa.

John Oxx's Saddler's Rock put the pace to the race, closely shadowed by Statutory, but those two were sitting ducks.

Cavalryman cruised through the pack and took up the running on the bridle before sprinting clear to prove he will be the one to beat again over two miles on World Cup night at the end of March.

De Sousa told At The Races: "The way he did it, you couldn't ask any more.

"I hope he keeps in one piece and I think he will have a big shout on the big night."

The Michael Halford-trained Certerach claimed third, while Willie Mullins' Simenon appeared in need of the run on his Dubai bow and stayed on from the rear to finish fifth.

De Sousa and Bin Suroor had earlier been on the mark with Free Wheeling in the Meydan Sobha Handicap.

The trainer told www.godolphin.com: "We changed Free Wheeling from turf to Tapeta and he handled the surface really well.

"He showed some class with his work in the mornings and that gave us the chance to go for this race.

"Free Wheeling showed a good turn of foot over the distance and Silvestre de Sousa kept him nice and handy throughout the race. He won really nicely.

"We will have a look at how he comes out of tonight and find another race for him."

Mike De Kock and Christophe Soumillon were also in double form, teaming up with Kavanagh in the District One Handicap and Sanshaawes in the District One Phase III Handicap.
