Mark Coumbe was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham following a fall in the opening race at Southwell.

The 3lb claimer was unshipped when his mount Gebayl lost its action, stumbled and came down two and a half furlongs out in the six-furlong handicap, bringing down William Carson on Roxy Lane.

Carson appeared to escape relatively unscathed though he was taken off his mount, Hannah Louise, in the following race.

Coumbe received treatment on track before being taken to hospital. He was reported to be conscious when he left the course and was accompanied by the racecourse doctor, meaning a delay to the race programme.

"Mark Coumbe's gone to hospital and the doctor has gone with him. We are waiting for full medical provision to return before we commence racing again," said clerk of the course Roderick Duncan.

"I understand they have now arrived at the hospital.

"William Carson is OK and both horses are OK as well."

When Martin Dwyer was injured in a fall at the Nottinghamshire track last month racing was delayed by an hour and a half hour but the card was successfully completed just 20 minutes later than scheduled.
