McDonogh: Rode Sho Girl to success
Sho Girl ran out a surprise 25/1 winner of the Friends Of Tony Wright Memorial Handicap to cap a memorable afternoon for owners Ballylinch Stud at Listowel.
Successful earlier on the card with Fulminata, Sho Girl made it a quick-fire double for Ballylinch's homebred pair in the one-mile-six-furlong flat feature.
Declan McDonogh went for home reasonably early aboard the Patrick Prendergast-trained winner, but Sho Girl kept finding in the finish to repel the challenge of veteran Caim Hill by three and three-quarter lengths.
Clara Bel La was third while 3/1 favourite Victory Song was eased at the top of the straight when his chance was gone.
Fulminata was making it two wins this week in the Speedy's Bars Moyvane & Ballylongford Handicap after winning a maiden at the track on Monday.
Killian Hennessy claimed a useful 7lb on Jim Bolger's charge and he duly steered home the 5/2 favourite.
Bolger's travelling head lad Ger Flynn said: "It's great to get two wins in a week with her. It's great for Ballylinch Stud as she's a Holy Roman Emperor filly.
"She's a very tough, genuine filly. Killian did everything right on her."
Owega Star (11/10 favourite) made it fourth-time lucky over fences with victory in the Kevin McManus Beginners Chase.
A Grade Two winner over hurdles, Owega Star had turned in a couple of promising efforts over the bigger obstacles, most recently when second at Kilbeggan.
However, everything fell right this time and while Clonbanan Lad put up a good fight, Owega Star was four and a quarter lengths too good.
