The Paul Nicholls-trained grey looked set for a profitable campaign when winning the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham on his first run of the winter in November.
However, he suffered a slight tendon injury which has put him on the sidelines.
"He's making a full recovery. He's had a small operation and he's having three hours on the walker every day," owner John Hales told At The Races.
"The target is going to be the King George on Boxing Day, all being well.
"Paul always thought this year would have been too early for him for the Gold Cup, but next year, yes.
"You have to think, potentially, you could have a Gold Cup horse on your hands."
