Imperial Guest, runner-up in last season's Stewards' Cup at Goodwood, was put down after fracturing a bone in a hind leg at Kempton on Wednesday.

The seven-year-old gelding was the 4/11 favourite for the Betdaq Mobile Apps Conditions Stakes over seven furlongs, but was pulled up by Ian Mongan two furlongs from home after having lost his action.

Trainer George Margarson said: "He took a bad step and there was no way back for him. He hadn't even had a gallop. We only ran him to get him ready for Dubai - he was meant to fly out on Sunday.

"It was either come here under the lights or go for a racecourse gallop somewhere.

"This is a big loss for the yard - I'm in bits."

Imperial Guest won six races from 42 starts and earned over £215,000 in prize-money.

He was last seen on turf finishing an excellent fourth in the Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot in October.
