David Marnane expects Santo Padre to improve for the run as he returns to action in the Listed Belgrave Stakes at Fairyhouse.
The seven-year-old won the Portland Handicap back in 2009 but has since found life tougher in Pattern and Listed company.
Santo Padre has been off the track since finishing second in a Haydock Listed event in May, but he returns in Fairyhouse's six-furlong feature where he faces 13 rivals including stablemate Partner.
"Fortunately the draw has been kind to both horses. Santo Padre will jump from gate three, with Partner next door in stall two," the trainer told www.davidmarnaneracing.com.
"Santo Padre is in good order but will be better for the race having been given a short break after his trip to Britain.
"The plan was to give him a break mid-summer before targeting a late-summer campaign, the period of the season he has thrived in the past."
