A review of the rest of the action from day one of Glorious Goodwood, as Misleading won for Peter Chapple-Hyam.
Misleading looked a horse to follow for trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam when making a winning debut under William Buick in the bet365 EBF Maiden over six furlongs at Goodwood on Tuesday afternoon.
The son of Footstepsinthesand pulled a length and a half clear of the twice-raced Aussie Ruler at the line. The 5/2 favourite Dark Profit, owned like the winner by Fitri Hay, was a nose further back in third for trainer Charlie Hills.
"Misleading is named after me!" joked Chapple-Hyam.
"He is nice but still raw and immature. I did say to Alex (Cole, racing manager for Fitri Hay) not to run two in the same race because this horse goes nicely.
"I have always liked him but he has had sore shins. We have taken our time and I am pleased for Jim (Hay) who has been a good supporter.
"He is qualifies for French premiums, so he will go over there at some stage. He is in the Gimcrack but won't go there if I have my way."
Hugo Palmer praised a masterful ride by Ryan Moore from stall one on 3-1 favourite Extremity to retain the bet365 Handicap the trainer landed last year with Ascription before outlining future targets.
"I said to Ryan it's not going to be easy from stall one to ride a waiting race so you'll have to ride it as you see fit. They went hard early, and every furlong he [Moore] moved out a horse's width further off the rail.
"There's a race over a mile and a quarter at the Istanbul International Meeting for three-year-olds only and it's worth a fortune, so we have that in mind.
"There's also a mile race at York which we won last year with Sure Squeeze and that's a possibility. He's had a hard race today - I hoped the cheekpieces would make a difference and they seem to have done. He was always just getting there.
"I didn't notice until I made the entry that it was the race we won last year with Ascription. It was no long-term plan because I thought we would take him to Sandown tomorrow night. In this race it was competitive, but we were the only unexposed young horse with the potential to run well.
"The second the entry came out, Tony Hind, Ryan's agent, rang up and asked if he could ride. Ryan beat us at Sandown last time, and later told Tony he'd like to ride the third next time out."
Paul Hanagan, who was stood down after taking a fall during the afternoon, missed riding the winner of the concluding Casino At bet365 Handicap, with Tom Queally deputising on Inxile (20-1).
Trainer Dandy Nicholls was absent at Beverley, and travelling groom Ernie Greaves said of Inxile, who was running in his 65th race: "We've had a winner at Beverley [Mister Manannan, ridden by the trainer's son, Adrian] and this is a bonus. He's a big, old horse and he's seen it all, but with sprint handicappers when they are ready they go and do it.
"Tom was very obliging and stood in the breach when it seemed Paul wouldn't be available. He's a pretty useful sub and everything has turned out well."
Queally said: "The horse is in good form and sprinters often have longevity. I didn't know how much ability he has or had, but I didn't interfere with him, I just left him to it.
"He wasn't green, that's for sure."
