Penitent: Unlikely to run at Newmarket

Penitent is unlikely to take up his engagement in the Dubai Challenge Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.

The Middleham Park-owned six-year-old ran a fine race to be runner-up to Gordon Lord Byron in the Qatar Prix de la Foret at Longchamp on Sunday, hot on the heels of his victory in the Group Two Nayef Joel Stakes at Newmarket nine days earlier.

He'd have to carry a penalty in Saturday's Group Two contest that kicks off Dubai Future Champions Day at Newmarket but trainer David O'Meara isn't likely to let him take his chance.

He told skysports.com: "He's on his way back from France now and he'll be back in the yard this evening but I believe he came out of the race fine.

"I was delighted with his performance, it's only the second time we've tried him at that level and he's run really well.

"I don't know whether he will run on Saturday. I would say it's unlikely at the moment as it's a case of conserving him now.

"He's had three races in quick succession. It's possible he'll run again this season as he likes this autumn ground but I'll have to speak to the owners and we'll see."

Penitent is among 18 horses to be entered for the Dubai Challenge Stakes.

Richard Hannon has three entries with Libranno, Producer and Bronterre while Mark Johnston could be represented by Van Ellis and Fulbright.

Aidan O'Brien relies on Reply while John Gosden has Gregorian and Fencing entered up.

Telwaar and Sunday Times could go for Peter Chapple-Hyam while Aljamaaheer could bid to improve on his Celebration Mile third for Roger Varian.

Red Jazz, Edinburgh Knight, Scarf, Pearl Mix, Arnold Lane and Elshabakiya complete the entries.
