The 40-year-old from Dublin is something of a boom or bust major performer: he has good spells and bad spells. In 2007 and 2008 he won the Open twice, the PGA Championship once and had another two top ten finishes. But in 2010-11 he missed five cuts and his best finish was T22nd. This year he finished in the top ten at Augusta National and was tied fourth in the US Open - is he back in a boom period and is a third Open win on the cards? The look on his face down the stretch at the Olympic Club in the US Open was familiar - it was the stare he made famous when winning his majors, a look of desire and total concentration. If he can get himself in contention on the final day, that mental strength will be priceless. He can also bring good memories of Royal Lytham to the table - he made his major debut there in 1996 and was in sixth place at halfway and he played well in 2001 after a first round left him outside the top 100. Has to be on the short-list.
