Like his fellow countryman Lee Westwood, Luke Donald has reached number one in the world thanks to a wonderful level of consistency that every other professional golfer in the world must envy. But there is a difference: Westwood has transferred that reliability to the majors, Donald hasn't. That's not to say he doesn't have good finishes: last year he was tied fourth at the Masters and tied eighth at the PGA Championship. But seven of his last ten majors starts have seen him finish outside the top 30. For a golfer who week in, week out churns out top ten finishes that is below par. He'll know that more than anyone else, of course, and he'll be taking measures to improve his performance. That will involve work with Dave Alred, a mental preparation and performance-under-pressure coach who turned Jonny Wilkinson into such a well-drilled machine. Donald will often talk to Alred right up until his tee time. The question is: will they be chatting in earnest late on Sunday afternoon?
