The 39-year-old Englishman's consistency in major championship golf has been little short of magnificent in recent years. In his last 18 starts he has finished in the top three seven times and in the top 25 a further six times. The problem is he just can't find a way to win. It makes a striking contrast with his friend Darren Clarke's major record: his last 18 starts have reaped nine missed cuts and just one top ten. The thing is, that was a win. It is another example of what a very cruel game golf can be. A slight oddity in Westwood's Open record is his shocking results at English venues: in seven starts he has a best finish of just T31st. Can he finally claim the major he craves? We know he is in form (he's a two-time winner this year) and we know he can contend in the majors (he did so at both the Masters and the US Open). It's the same old story really: we know he's good enough, but can he find that little bit extra? Only time will tell.
