Bernd Wiesberger of Austria tees off during the Lyoness Open day one at the Diamond Country Club on June 5, 2014 in Atzenbrug
Bernd Wiesberger’s consolation for missing out on the Lyoness Open title is a place in the field for this week’s US Open.
The Austrian was denied victory on home soil on Sunday when Mikael Lundberg drained a 40-foot putt on the first play-off hole to snatch a dramatic first European Tour title.
But Wiesberger’s performance was enough to lift him into the top 60 in the world rankings, earning him a start in the second major of the year at Pinehurst.
Kevin Na is also a confirmed starter via the world rankings having risen to 40th following a superb run of form which has yielded five top-10 finishes this season.
US Open organisers had reserved five places for non-exempt players who had the chance to break into the world’s top-60 after the weekend events worldwide.
But Wiesberger and Na were the only men to take advantage, so the top three alternates from sectional qualifying in the United States have also been added to the field.
Craig Barlow will play in his sixth US Open, while amateur pair Cameron Wilson and Brandon McIver will also tee up on Thursday.
