Royal Lytham will play host to the Open Championship for the first time since 2001

After a wait of 11 years, The Open returns to Royal Lytham and St Annes which will stage golf's oldest Major championship for the 11th time this week.

Just a few miles down the road from the tourist resort of Blackpool, Lytham possesses one of the toughest finishing run of holes on the Open rota.

Few golfers ever cover its famed final five holes in under-par, with the 14th, 15th, 17th and 18th, a quartet of the most challenging par 4s in championship golf.

Lytham, whose layout is more compact than most other Open venues, is rarely ripped apart, even in benign conditions.

St Andrews, Muirfield, Royal Birkdale, Turnberry and Royal St Georges have all yielded at least one 63 and multiple 64s over the years.

However, only one golfer has ever shot as low as 64 in an Open at Lytham, that being Tom Lehman in his title-winning year of 1996.

So who's teeing-up this week?

Rickie Fowler: As a 22-year-old at Royal St George's he impressed everyone with his mature performance, which ended with the young American finishing in a tie-for-fifth - five shots adrift of winner Darren Clarke.

Jim Furyk: Has the experience to cope with all the difficult conditions likely to face the golfers this week in west Lancashire - especially if the weather becomes a key factor. He contended all four days at the recent US Open in California.

Dustin Johnson: Usually unfazed by tough playing conditions. Tied-second at Sandwich 12 months ago and, after missing around three months of the current season through injury, he returned to win in Tennessee in early June.

Martin Kaymer: Remains one of the world's great talents despite a quiet few months. The German tied-12th in The Open last year and posted a top-20 finish at last month's American equivalent.

Lee Westwood: Lytham is most certainly a ball-striker's course and there are few better current exponents - if any - than the Englishman. Providing the 39-year-old has recovered from the bizarre groin injury he suffered in France two weeks ago, he should be one of the front runners this weekend.

Tiger Woods: Even though the former world No 1 has not won a Major championship in over four years, he must always be considered a likely contender for any title. A three-time winner during 2012, Tiger's most recent Open success came at Royal Liverpool six years ago.
