The Open 2014

13th-20th July

Presented by

Bubba Watson

Bubba arrived in the UK last year under something of a cloud following a display of poor golf and poor PR ("the big tower", "an arch", "that building that starts with an L") in the French Open in Paris. In the end he had a reasonable week at Royal St George's, finishing tied 30th after previously missing the cut on his only other two Open starts. However, this year he'll be welcomed to Lytham with Open arms after his brilliant and emotional victory in The Masters at Augusta. The big question now is whether 'Bubba golf' will work on the links. In theory, Watson's huge creativity is a big plus and surely it will inspire him a little further that Seve Ballesterors won two of his three Opens at Lytham to show that the course can reward flair. Perhaps the biggest problem though is Bubba coming to terms with his world being turned upside down. As well as the enormous extra media focus following his high-profile first major win at Augusta, he's also had the added life-changing experience of a first child after he and wife Angie adopted a baby boy. Then again, a second place at the admittedly low-key Travelers Championship on his last start suggests he's starting to come to terms with it all.
