The Open 2014

13th-20th July

Presented by

Graeme McDowell

The Northern Irishman is something of a throwback in the modern age. His quick, abbreviated swing is more akin to the 1970s than today's well-drilled, coached-from-an-early-age metronomes. But it is more than that - he also wins by dint of mental strength and the joy of the scrap, much as the likes of Raymond Floyd did. With that in mind it was worth taking note of his reaction to coming up just short of claiming a second US Open title last month. "It (finishing second) has reinforced to me that I can compete and win more major championships." His record in the Open is not as strong as you would expect from a man brought up on the links of Royal Portrush: he has just two top 20 finishes from eight attempts. But a quirk of his record is that on both those occasions he was fast out the traps, leading after day one. He was also in contention last year after 18 holes (sixth) only to miss the cut. One year he seems bound to stick around the top of the leaderboard - will it be 2012?
