The Open 2014

13th-20th July

Presented by

Rory McIlroy

"Rory McIlroy chokes on a soggy Sandwich," cried the headline writers of the Daily Mail 12 months ago after McIlroy's hunt for the Claret Jug stalled in the wind and rain of Royal St Georges. It was not a good day for the Northern Irishman. What some viewed as an honest assessment of his chances in bad weather ("I can win an Open. I just have to wait for a year when the weather's nice") was deemed whingeing by others. It didn't help that 12 months earlier he led after a round one 63 at St Andrew's only to shoot 80 in the wind of round two. McIlroy is refreshingly honest though and has returned to the theme since rather than swept it under the carpet. At this year's Irish Open he said the more he played in poor weather the better he would become at coping with it. This year he also has to deal with barbs about his form being influenced by his relationship with tennis player Caroline Wozniacki. But if conditions suit don't rule him out: a calm Lytham would suit his high-ball flight wonderfully.
