Ernie Els finally got his hands on the Claret Jug after several near misses at Muirfield, but had to endure the first four man play off in the history of the event to do so. The South African looked poised to win in regulation play but dropped a crucial shot at the 16th. However, in extra holes he held his nerve to get the better of Steve Elkington, Stuart Appleby and crucially Thomas Levet, winning by a single stroke.
