Geoff Ogilvy picked up 12 points to storm into a three-point lead after three rounds of the Barracuda Championship in Nevada.
The former US Open champion had started the day three back of halfway leader Nick Watney in a tournament using a Modified Stableford scoring system.
However he moved on to 35 points to take over at the top of the leaderboard thanks to seven birdies, the last of which came when he got up and down from a greenside bunker at the last.
The Australian, who also had two bogeys in his round, is playing at Montreux Golf and Country Club for just the third time after failing to earn a spot in the field for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
"I played quite well today," he said. "Birdied the par-fives I needed to birdie ... it's definitely a format that rewards the guy that makes a lot of birdies."
Watney, meanwhile, notched six points on Saturday to fall into a tie for second with Jason Allred, who managed an impressive 14.
John Mallinger, though, was the star performer, recording 19 points to set a single-day tournament record and catapult him into a tie for fifth place.
He boosted his tally with a hole-in-one at the par-three 11th that was worth five points, while he also had seven birdies.
"In this format, you get five points obviously you're right back in the tournament," said Mallinger, who surpassed the mark of 18, set by Jonathan Byrd last year and matched by Watney on Thursday.
Players gain eight points for double eagles, five for eagles, two for birdies and zero for pars and are docked one point for bogeys and three points for double bogeys or worse.
