Angel Cabrera: Narrowly missed chances to clinch second Masters

Angel Cabrera was gracious in defeat after being pipped to the Masters title by Adam Scott in a sudden-death play-off at Augusta National.

Cabrera started the final round tied for the lead with Brandt Snedeker, and he led outright by three shots with birdies at the second and seventh taking him to nine under.

But a poor drive cost him a shot at the 10th, and an ambitious second to the 13th from the pine straw landed in Rae's Creek as he relinquished his lead to Jason Day.

The 2009 champion hit back with a birdie at 16 to tie Scott for the lead on eight under as Day - and daylight - faded, but he then watched helplessly from the 18th fairway as Scott drained a 25-footer for birdie.

However, the Argentine smote a delightful approach to two feet and he rattled into the putt for a 70 to force a play-off, and he almost chipped in for birdie when the leading pair returned to the 18th.

Cabrera's birdie putt at the next - the 10th - grazed the lip, and Scott's 15-footer moments later found the middle of the cup.

"That's how golf is. I came back and I had that chip on 18, I could have won it," said the 43-year-old, who has not contended for a major second winning at Augusta four years ago.

"But Adam's a good winner. I would have been happier if I had won but he's a great player, I get along with him, we've played together in the President's Cup and I'm happy for him."
