Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri is having to cut short his honeymoon having secured a place at the Open Championship.
The Asian Tour Order of Merit leader has earned place at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake as one of ten players handed spots as the leading non-exempt players in the world rankings at the cut-off point on June 30.
The 27-year-old, who is ranked 81st in the Official World Golf Rankings, was cut by surprise by the announcement by the R&A and, having got married in May, is having to return early from honeymoon to prepare.
“I am two days into my 10-day honeymoon. In the middle of a tropical rainforest in Madagascar and trying to get back to India now ASAP. Total chaos. Will have to make it up to the wife big time. Super excited,” said Lahiri in a message to the Asian Tour.
“Just trying to figure out my movements so that I can get ready for The Open.”
It will be a second Open experience for Lahiri, who enjoyed a memorable debut at Royal Lytham in 2012 when he hit a hole-in-one during the third round en route to a tied 31st finish.
Lahiri will be joined in Hoylake by Korean veteran KJ Choi, who has also made the Open field courtesy of being ranked 66 in the world.
It will be a 15th Open appearance for former Choi, who has a best finish of joint eighth in the event back in 2007.
