US Open: Sky Sports reviews the best of the action from the final round at Pinehurst

Martin Kaymer crushed his rivals in emphatic fashion as he won the US Open at Pinehurst No 2 by eight shots.

It was the German’s second major title, with Kaymer completing the wire-to-wire victory and remaining unchallenged throughout the four days.

His back-to-back 65s moved him clear and even though he had a slight wobble on day three with two-over 72, he closed out the win with a final-round 69.

Eric Compton and Rickie Fowler were the only other players to finish under par, but they were well adrift of the new champion.

And we review the best of Sky Sports’ post-round coverage with some of the leading protagonists giving their slant on proceedings in North Carolina.

Martin Kaymer: Champion

Martin Kaymer has set his sights on winning the Open Championship to complete a 'German Grand Slam' following his dominant triumph in the US Open. Kaymer’s eight-shot victory saw him add the US Open title to his US PGA Championship victory in 2010 – and with Bernhard Langer having won the US Masters twice, the Open is the only major championship yet to have been won by a German player.  "We almost have the German Grand Slam - it's only the Open missing," Kaymer joked. “Winning the PGA, winning this one now, I hope it will make Bernhard proud. I'm sure it will make all Germany proud.”

Matt Fitzpatrick finished on a high

England's Matt Fitzpatrick completed his amateur career in style on Sunday with a final round of 69 in the US Open at Pinehurst. Of the 11 amateurs in the field, Fitzpatrick was the only one to make the halfway cut and therefore became the first player to hold the title of low amateur at the US Open and Open Championship at the same time since Bobby Jones in 1930. "It's been a great week, I really enjoyed it," said Fitzpatrick, who will make his professional debut in the Irish Open at Fota Island next week. "My aim was to win the low amateur and to achieve it is pretty pleasing. Playing with some of the biggest names - I played with Phil and Justin, a practice round with Rory (McIlroy), playing with Louis (Oosthuizen) on the last day - has been great.

Day Four blog

Sky Sports expert and former Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie was left almost speechless following Martin Kaymer’s commanding victory at Pinehurst No 2, claiming it was the best golf he had seen in 14 years. “I have run out of superlatives,” Montgomerie told Sky Sports. ”We have been saying this all four days haven’t we. From the first 65 onwards it has been unbelievable golf and the best golf we have seen since the year 2000, since Tiger Woods won by that terrific score at Pebble Beach. This has been a joy to witness.”

Shots of the day

It was another tough day at the Pinehurst No 2, with birdies at a premium. However there was still a fair sprinkling of magical moments on the final day. Among our selection, Matt Kuchar holed a superb putt up the slope on the third, while Justin Rose sunk a beauty at the fifth. Steve Stricker chipped in on the 7th while Keegan Bradley made an eagle at the 314-yard par-four 13th after his stunning drive. However Zach Johnson went one better as he aced the ninth before doing a lap of honour in celebration of the first hole-in-one at the 2014 US Open
