Ryder Cup: Davis Love set to be named US captain for 2016

USA Team captain Davis Love III waits on the first tee during day two of the Morning Foursome Matches for The 39th Ryder Cup

Davis Love III is expected to be unveiled as the United States captain for next year's Ryder Cup on Tuesday evening.

The PGA of America have confirmed that the skipper for Hazeltine will be announced during a press conference at their headquarters at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens - venue for this week's star-studded Honda Classic.

Love is the firm favourite to take on the role for the second time, giving him the chance to atone for the astonishing defeat to Europe in the Miracle at Medinah in 2012.

The 50-year-old was being hailed as a tactical maestro after guiding his team to a 10-6 victory over the first two days in Chicago, but the plaudits turned into heavy criticism 24 hours later following Europe's remarkable fightback in the singles.

Dustin Johnson, Zach Johnson and Jason Dufner were the only American players to win on Sunday as Europe won eight-and-a-half points out of 12 in the session to snatch a thrilling one-point triumph for Jose Maria Olazabal.

Tom Watson's methods were also widely lambasted after their tame defeat at Gleneagles last year, with Phil Mickelson choosing the post-Ryder Cup press conference to champion the tactics of Paul Azinger in 2008.

The third straight defeat in the competition prompted the PGA of America to set up a Ryder Cup "task force", charged with the responsibility of selecting the next captain and considering possible changes to the qualifying criteria.

Love is a member of the 11-man committee which also includes Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler and former captains Tom Lehman and Ray Floyd.

"The Ryder Cup is our most prized competitive asset, and the PGA of America is committed to utilizing our utmost energy and resources to support one of the biggest events in all of sport," said former PGA president Ted Bishop, who was later sacked after making "inappropriate" comments about Ian Poulter.

Love made his Ryder Cup debut as a player in 1993 and played in six contests, winning nine of his 26 matches, losing 12 and halving five.

He holed the winning putt on his debut as he hit back from one down with two to play to snatch victory over Costantino Rocca, and he lost only one of his six singles encounters.

In his final playing appearance in 2004, he halved his match with close friend Darren Clarke, who was appointed as the European captain last week.
