Golfer Robert Allenby has described how he was kidnapped, beaten and robbed in Hawaii on Friday night after missing the cut at the Sony Open.

The Australian was at a wine bar near Waikiki with his caddie and a friend on a night out.

He says he was taken from a bar and driven to an underground car park where he was knocked out, thrown into the boot of a car and then dumped in a park six miles away after having his wallet, credit cards and phone stolen.

"I'm just glad to be alive," said Allenby. "I'm still in a bit of shock. I've been checked out by a doctor, and I should be ok.

"I was separated from my friend in the bar after we had paid the tab," Allenby recounted. "Next thing you know, I'm being dumped in a park miles away. A homeless woman found me and told me she saw a few guys pull up and throw me out of a car."

Allenby said he had no recollection of what had happened and that he was discovered outside the park by a man he described as "a retired military guy," who paid for a taxi back to his hotel.

"I called police from there," Allenby said.

Fellow Australian player Stuart Appleby says he spoke to Allenby in his hotel room Saturday morning and that the 43-year-old was trying to reconstruct what happened.

Appleby did not want to disclose what he said because "I don't know how straight his brain is."

The Golf Channel reports Allenby returned to the wine bar with police to review the surveillance footage.

No arrest has been made at this point.
