Tiger Woods claims he has made a quicker return to action than expected

Tiger Woods claims he is ahead of schedule and is ‘excited’ to be making his comeback after more than three months out of action due to injury.

The 38-year-old makes his competitive return in Maryland on Thursday when he tees-up in the Quicken Loans National at Congressional.

The 14-time major winner has been sidelined following back surgery but admits he did not expect to be returning to tournament golf until The Open Championship in Liverpool in mid-July.

Woods says: "I'm actually probably ahead of schedule where everyone thought I would be at.

"It has been a very, very long time, probably a good two years since I've felt this way.

"We all thought the British Open would be my first event back but I healed fast and I'm going to get stronger as time goes on.

Interesting

"This has been quite a tedious little process but one where I got to a point where I can play competitive golf again and it's pretty exciting.

"All the strengthening exercises I've done throughout the years have paid off and have allowed me to get back quicker and to get back to this point.

"When you get treatment all the time, it's amazing what you can do."

Woods will partner Australian Jason Day and fellow American Jordan Spieth in rounds one and two at Congressional and he remains as competitive as ever.

Asked if he thought he could overtake Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18 major wins, Woods adds: "Expectations don't change. That's the ultimate goal.

"It's just that it's going to be a little bit harder this time but I'm good enough to play and I'm going to give it a go.”

His most recent major success came at Torrey Pines in June 2008, with his next opportunity coming next month at Hoylake where he won The Open eight years ago.
