Ben Crane carded a five-under-par 65 on Friday to open up a six-shot lead in the FedEx St Jude Classic before the weather brought a premature end to play in Memphis with the likes of Phil Mickelson and Retief Goosen unable to tee off in their second rounds.

Crane stormed out in front with a flawless first 17 holes which included six birdies. He blotted his copybook with a bogey at the par-four 18th, but still finished the day well ahead of the pack.

Leaderboard

(US unless stated)
-12 B Crane (36 holes)
-6 C Pettersson (Swe) (35)
-6 J Bohn (34)
-5 D Love III (36)
-5 B Horschel (36)
-5 P Malnati (18)

Sweden's Carl Pettersen and American Jason Bohn were tied for second on six under. Both were three under for the day - Pettersen had one hole left, and Bohn two - when heavy rain which had twice delayed the action finally forced organisers to suspend play for the day.

Davis Love III (70) and Billy Horschel (68) were in at five under and shared fourth spot with their fellow American Peter Malnati, who registered a 65 on Thursday and was one of the frustrated onlookers on Friday.

Goosen was one of a cluster of players a stroke back on four under following his opening 66, with Mickelson a further shot adrift after his first-round 67.

Mickelson was joined on the three-under mark by Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter. The Northern Irishman signed for a 68 on Friday, while the Englishman was two under for his second round with one hole to play.

Play will resume at 0700 local time on Saturday (1300 BST), when better weather is forecast.
