New world No 1 Adam Scott edged Jason Dufner on a third play-off hole to take victory in the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

The Australian made a seven-foot birdie putt after a fantastic approach shot to finally see off Dufner, who he had finished level with on nine-under-par after 72 holes.

The two major winners both shot pars at the first play-off hole before Scott holed a superb 14-foot birdie putt at the second, although Dufner held his nerve to make his own putt and keep the tournament alive.

But Scott’s brilliant second shot at the next hole ultimately proved decisive.

"This is a really special week for me," the 33-year-old said after his win.

"It was, no matter what happened here. But to kind of find my way back into this tournament, around this golf course - it's a real honor to win here. It's a beauty."

The 2013 Masters champion needed to finish in the top 13 to stay ahead of Henrik Stenson in the rankings and achieved that with plenty of room to spare.

Joining Lingmerth on seven under were Ryan Palmer, Brendon Todd, John Senden and David Toms.

Toms began the final round level at the top of the leaderboard but fell well back along with fellow third-round pace-setters Chad Campbell and Chris Stroud.
