Wales' Amy Boulden headed the eight qualifiers from the inaugural international qualifying event for the US Women's Open on Monday.

Boulden carded two rounds of 71 at Buckinghamshire Golf Club to finish the 36-hole event on two under par, one shot ahead of Scotland's Kelsey MacDonald and South African Nicole Garcia.

The remaining five qualifiers all finished on level par, with English trio Lucy Williams, Rebecca Hudson and Holly Clyburn joined by Australian pair Stephanie Na and Nikki Campbell.

Eight places

A total of 73 players tried to gain one of the eight available places at Pinehurst from June 19-22, the week after the men's US Open will be staged at the same venue.

International qualifying for the men's event was introduced in 2005 and Michael Campbell took full advantage, the New Zealander securing his place with a birdie on the last hole at Walton Heath and going on to win his first major title at Pinehurst.

Asia also hosted three qualifying events on Monday at venues in China, Japan and Korea, a reflection of the current balance of power in the women's game. Korean players have won five of the last six US Opens.
