Steve Stricker has admitted he is likely to miss the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship later this month due to his brother's ill health.

Stricker's brother Scott, 50, is currently in intensive care in a Wisconsin hospital - where he has been since early January - awaiting a liver transplant.

Whilst he is still ready to play should he get the opportunity, Stricker concedes it is now unlikely he will make the trip to Phoenix given his brother's precarious situation.

"He's walking a tightrope is what they're telling me," the world number 12 said. "He needs a liver. He's holding his own, but this can't last forever. Hopefully, we get one soon.

Long shot

"I was going to leave today (Tuesday) to go to Phoenix for a few days, but that's not going to happen. It's going to be a long shot if I come and play.

"I'm practicing every day, but in the back of my mind, I feel like I'm not going to be there - unless something happens rather quickly, and they say it can. But if one comes available, I wanted to be around for the surgery."

Stricker's absence would come as another blow to event organisers in Phoenix with Tiger Woods, Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson having already confirmed they will not be competing at Dove Mountain and Justin Rose struggling to make the trip because of injury.

Should Stricker, as expected, miss the tournament, fellow American Brooks Koepka would come into the first-round draw given he is currently first reserve for the World Golf Championships event.
