The 35-year-old posted a bogey-free eight-under-par 64 at Annandale to move to the top of the leaderboard by end of play on Friday.
However, the second day of the tournament was ruined by thunderstorms and meant Thursday's pacesetter Daniel Summerhays was unable to complete his second round.
Gomez ended his second round with an eagle three at the 18th where he holed from all of 50-feet.
He is currently 136th in the season's FedEx Cup standings, chasing his maiden Tour title.
Other players tied on 10 under par include Vaughn Taylor, Paul Stankowski, Troy Matteson and Kyle Reifers who have all completed 36 holes.
But one co-leader still on the course when play came to an end was Summerhays who had led after 18 holes thanks to a nine-under 63.
The 30-year-old from Utah could only finish eight holes on day two, adding a brace of birdies of the bogey he made on his opening hole.
Fifty-nine players were still on the course, although organisers are still hoping to complete 72 holes by Sunday evening.
