Johnson, who set the pace on Thursday alongside Camilo Villegas, posted five birdies in a flawless round as he carded his 18th successive sub-70 score.

He is joined at the top of the leaderboard by unheralded American Patrick Reed and 2009 US Open champion Lucas Glover.

Birdies

Reed fired a 63, with Glover going one lower, although it was Chez Reavie who posted the best score of the day - a 10-under 61 which featured eight birdies and an eagle at the par-five second to take him to nine under.

Australian Matt Jones (65) is in fourth place on 11 under, while American Troy Matteson, who lost out to Johnson in a play-off last year, is among a quintet of players on 10 under after shooting a 64.

Three-time champion Steve Stricker is well placed to mount another title challenge on nine under following a round of 66.

Sweden's Jonas Blixt, who won last week's Greenbrier Classic, missed the cut after finishing on one under despite a 67, while South African world No 10 Louis Oosthuizen will also have a blank weekend ahead of next week's Open Championship after a 70 left him on level par.
