Ryan Palmer cashed in on his extra local knowledge to take the first-round lead at the Crowne Plaza Invitational with a stunning eight-under 62.

Palmer, a member at Colonial Country Club in Texas, matched the lowest first round in the tournament's history and also the low round of his PGA Tour career as he fired in eight birdies and not a single bogey.

"That was a lot of fun. I hit it close, I had a lot of six, seven footers for birdie today," said Palmer, who holds a one-shot lead over fellow American John Rollins.

"I guess it's a benefit being a member here. I was able to attack it and it paid off."

"This golf course, I know where to hit it. I hit driver all day just because I've done it so many times. I guess it's a benefit being a member here. I was able to attack it and it paid off."

Rollins is alone in second after holing a 21 footer at 18 for a seven-under 63, while Canadian duo David Hearn and Graham DeLaet share third place with American Morgan Hoffman after 64s.

Defending champion Zach Johnson, who also won this title in 2010, shot a one-under 69 to finish tied with last week's winner Sang-Moon Bae and Rickie Fowler.

World number 13 Matt Kuchar, the highest ranked player in the field is nicely placed on five-under but pre-tournament favourite Charl Schwartzel of South Africa shot a lacklustre even par 70.

England's Brian Davis, fresh from booking a place in the Open Championship at Muirfield in July after finishing joint fourth in the American leg of International Final Qualifying, had four birdies and a single bogey in a three-under 67.
