An excellent field has assembled in Charlotte for one of the more popular stops on the PGA Tour calendar.

Quail Hollow usually attracts a strong contingent and is seen by many top pros as a suitably challenging test of golf ahead of next week's Players Championship at Sawgrass.

Opened in June 1961, Quail Hollow made its Tour debut eight years later by hosting the Kemper Open.

The North Carolina course, which rarely crowns a weak champion, returned to the schedule in 2003 after a 24-year interlude and following a Tom Fazio upgrade during the late 1990s.

It is not a typical PGA Tour venue, many of which are covered by huge lakes, although water does come into play on five holes - four of these on the back nine.
