Tiger Woods put Rory McIlroy in the shade as he wielded a hot putter to earn a share of the first-round lead in the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral.

While McIlroy continued to struggle with his all-round game in a 73, Woods carded nine birdies in an entertaining six-under 66.

Woods teed off at the 10th and nailed birdie putts at 11 and 12, only to give both shots back before further birdies at the 16th and 18th took him to the turn in 34.

The 14-time major winner then picked up three shots over the next four holes, dropping one at the third, and he added birdies at seven and eight to join a five-way tie at the top.

Woods, who revealed he had been working on his putting under the guidance of Ryder Cup team-mate Steve Stricker, insisted the Blue Monster would soon bite back after a benign opening day of low scores.

"I don't think we're going to get all four days in this wind," he said. "It's got to switch sometime and come from the east.

"If it does then the course plays more difficult, but today was as easy as it gets round this place.

"It was certainly a day that could have been a little bit lower, and I like the venue. This course has been good to me over the years."
