Phil Mickelson went agonisingly close to becoming the sixth player in PGA Tour history to card a 59 after a stunning day at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Mickelson, a two-time winner of the event, saw his 26-foot birdie attempt on the final hole lip out to leave him on a 11-under 60.

That was still good enough to hand the American a four-shot lead, with Mickelson delighted with his efforts in Arizona.

"I'm ecstatic to shoot 60," he said. "I am excited and so forth but you don't get chances to shoot 59 very often.

"To have that putt on line, I'm kind of mortified that it didn't go in."

There is a five-man chasing pack on seven-under - although 33 players are yet to complete their round after darkness brought a premature end to the action.

Three-time major winner Padraig Harrington, along with Americans Brandt Snedeker, Jeff Maggert, Ryan Palmer and Ted Potter remain in touching distance - while 11 players are a shot further back.

Scotland's Martin Laird was leading the British challenge at two-under with three holes to play, while England's Greg Owen was on one-under.

It was a hugely disappointing day for European Ryder Cup hero Martin Kaymer however.

The German lives in Arizona but, in his first tournament in the US since his famous putt at Medinah, Kaymer finished the day in joint last place on three over. He has two holes of his first round to play.
