Tiger Woods produced a spell of some of his very best golf at Torrey Pines and declared himself satisfied with his four-under round of 68 despite some late bogeys.

Woods sits three shots behind joint-leaders KJ Choi and defending champion Brandt Snedeker after the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open in California.

The world number two missed the cut in Abu Dhabi last week but is back at one of his favourite venues in golf - having won the event six times and also added the 2008 US Open at the same course.

Tiger's Torrey Pines record

2011: 44th Farmers Insurance Open
2008: 1st US Open
2008: 1st Buick Invitational
2007: 1st Buick Invitational
2006: 1st Buick Invitational
2005: 1st Buick Invitational
2004: 10th Buick Invitational
2003: 1st Buick Invitational
2002: 5th Buick Invitational
2001: 4th Buick Invitational
2000: 2nd Buick Invitational
1999: 1st Buick Invitational
1998: 3rd Buick Invitational

After a disappointing double bogey at the fourth, Woods ran through the next nine holes in seven-under-par, before two late bogeys saw him slip back and settle for a four-under total.

Still, with Woods' score coming on the more difficult South Course, with the event being played on two courses at Torrey Pines, he was still pleased with his day's work.

"I had it to six (under), and I had a beautiful putt at 14 to get it to seven," Woods said. "After being one under and then one over, to battle back and get to six at one point was a good job."

Woods said he did not know what score he was aiming for at the easier North Course on Friday, with the weather making a big difference.

"It depends on the weather. If it blows, it's supposed to blow and rain, but it didn't materialize today, so we'll see what happens tomorrow.

"I made a few mistakes out there, but I made some nice plays as well. We couldn't ask for better conditions to score than we had today."

Woods insisted last week that his game was in good shape despite the missed cut, which came after receiving a penalty, and it certainly looked that way at times at Torrey Pines.

"Last week's conditions were a lot more difficult and the fairways were narrow and the wind was howling," said Woods.

"I felt like I was doing a lot of good things right last week. Unfortunately, only for a few days, but I was doing a lot of good things right. And I came out here today and basically did the same thing."
