The chase to end the season as the PGA Tour's No.1 golfer reaches a climax this weekend when the Tour Championship is staged at East Lake in Georgia. Opened in 1904, this famous Atlanta course fell into disrepair not long after staging the 1963 Ryder Cup before being restored to its former glory in the mid-1990s. And East Lake, the home course of legendary American golfer Bobby Jones, found its way back onto the PGA Tour schedule when it hosted the 1998 Tour Championship. Four years ago, its Bentgrass greens were converted to Bermudagrass and this week's Tour Championship will be the 12th to be staged at the venue. With the FedEx trophy up for grabs this Sunday, world No.1 Rory McIlory has a healthy 3,232-point lead going into the title decider. The permutations are huge and, in theory, any of the 30-man field can win the FedEx Cup and the amazing $10m bonus prize. However, only the top five in the current standings control their own destiny. In other words, if McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Nick Watney, Phil Mickelson or Brandt Snedeker win the Tour Championship, they'll win the FedEx Cup. Here are some of the leading contenders battling for the $1.44m cheque for winning the tournament (for those outside the top five in the FedEx standings we also list what has to happen for them to win the $10m bonus fund). Luke Donald: Without a victory in the States since March, the Englishman has enjoyed podium finishes in each of his last two trips to the Tour Championship. To win the FedEx Cup he'd have to win and hope McIlroy finishes ninth or worse. Zach Johnson: Carded a 60 at the course five years ago and generally performs well in the state of Georgia. Could win the FedEx Cup if he wins and the top five in the standings all finish fourth or worse. Rory McIlroy: The 23-year-old chases his fourth win in five starts. A victory in Atlanta would make him the first golfer to win three successive FedEx Cup play-off events. Phil Mickelson: A two-time winner in Atlanta hoping to maintain his promising late summer form. Lefty's most recent two starts have yielded finishes of tied 4th and tied 2nd. Bo Van Pelt: The American has made a rapid rise up the world rankings during the past year and is now inside the top 30. Seven of his last nine Tour starts have produced top-25 finishes and he was ninth at East Lake 12 months ago. Even if he wins, he'd need McIlroy to finish outside the top 12 and Woods outside the top four if he's to win the FedEx Cup. Tiger Woods: A former champion at East Lake and four-times a runner-up. Woods has fired four rounds of 64 or better at the venue in his seven tournament appearances going back to 1998.
