Englishman takes back-to-back major titles in America

England's Roger Chapman continued his fairy-tale season on the Champions Tour in America as he came from four strokes back to win the US Senior Open by two in Michigan. The 53-year-old, who in May earned more than £240,000 at the Senior PGA Championship, this time collected a cheque for more than £320,000 after a closing 66. Germany's Bernhard Langer led the entire field by four with a round to go, but stumbled to a two over 72 and so shared second spot with former Ryder Cup captains Tom Lehman and Corey Pavin and also Fred Funk. In 28 seasons on the European Tour Chapman's highest finish on the money list was 17th in 1988. For that he earned a total of £111,000, while he played 618 events between 1982 and 2009 and won only one of them. His victory in Rio de Janeiro in 2000 came on his 472nd Tour start and later that season he was part of an England side in the Alfred Dunhill Cup at St Andrews that prompted one national newspaper to ask "Is This The Worst Ever England Golf Team?" before the event. Chapman is having a new lease of life since turning 50, however, and as Langer struggled he picked up birdies at the second, eighth, 11th and 14th.

He did then bogey the 16th, but came straight back with another birdie and parred the last to seal his second "major" crown. "It's been a huge and fast rise," he said. "Basically, I was sort of a journeyman pro on the European Tour - 25 years, one victory. Loads of seconds, but I was always the journeyman. "I can't put my finger on why I won at Benton Harbor and why I won here. I'm just more confident in my golf swing. "[I've] been working with my coach, Gavin Christie. He basically says I'm not high maintenance. You've just got to hit the ball as late as possible. That's all he says to me. "To be in the company of such great golfers - Jack Nicklaus and Hale Irwin and Gary Player - is a huge, huge honour."
