KJ Choi leads the Sony Open by one stroke after an opening round of 64 at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.
Choi had three birdies on each half of the course for a six-under total and a one-shot lead over Jimmy Walker, Heath Slocum and Steve Marino.
"Today, I think what's meaningful is that I had a bogey-free round," said Choi, who saved par from a greenside bunker at the 18th.
"Yesterday in practice I felt my shots were coming back, that I was getting into my rhythm.
"Last week I had a bit of trouble with the putting. But this week I felt like my putting was coming back, and I felt very good today. I'm adjusting to the course very well."
England's Kenneth Ferrie got his new life on the PGA Tour off to a good start with a round of 66 that puts him in a nine-man group at four-under.
Ferrie, who earned his PGA Tour card at last month's qualifying school, could have been even better placed after missing birdie chances at his last two holes
The group at four-under also includes Swede Daniel Chopra - who won last week's season opening Mercedes-Benz Championsip - and Chad Campbell.
