American Ryder Cup star Patrick Reed has pulled out of this week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth for personal reasons.

The 24-year-old has also withdrawn from next week’s Irish Open but has chosen to compete closer to his Houston home in the Crowne Plaza Invitational, which starts on Thursday in Texas.

Reed initially cited "family reasons" for his late withdrawal from Wentworth and told the Golf Channel on Tuesday he did not wish to travel across the Atlantic due to a family member being terminally ill.

And on Wednesday morning, Reed posted a tribute on Twitter to that family member, understood to be his uncle, which read: "We will cherish all of our memories. We love you Greg. May you rest in peace. Hearts and Minds. #John11:25."

He had previously said in a statement: "I am really looking forward to playing on the European Tour this year which makes me even more disappointed to withdraw from Wentworth and the Irish Open.

"We will not be able to travel overseas at this time. My sincere apologies go to the organisers of both events, and to the fans. Thank you all for your support."

The world No 15 will now need to find two more events to play to fulfil the conditions of his European Tour membership.
