World No 1 Adam Scott thinks a major championship record score could be made on the final day of this Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.
Scott - who looked to be out of contention on six-under, 10 shots behind leader Rory McIlroy after his third round - feels scoring conditions are almost perfect in Hoylake.
Anticipated thunderstorms and heavy showers failed to materialise on Saturday and, with little wind, a number of players made moves up the leaderboard.
If that stays the same on Sunday, Scott is convinced the long-established 18-hole major championship record low of 63 - achieved multiple times – could finally be broken.
"If we have similar conditions to today, there are low scores out there,” said Scott. "If you can get it going for 18 holes, there's a chance for that major scoring record to be broken.
"If you can post a number at a major, you never know, because no matter how easy you might think it is, it's a lot harder with the pressure of a major out there for the leaders.
"I think out of the group of the guys up there, there's probably a low one in one of them. But like I said, you never know. We've seen so many crazy things happen. I've got to give myself some hope."
Scott did birdie five of the back nine but a double-bogey seven on the 10th was costly and he could only par each of the front nine holes.
"I played well but I putted so poorly the first 10 holes, missed every chance I gave myself,” he added. “Then I got in a spot of bother by the green at the 10th.
"But I know I'm playing well. I can create a lot of chances and if I make some, I could climb back up there."
